I didn't read much about it but I would be surprised if nobody at MS thought that it's nice to have what could eventually become the killer argument to force people upgrade their copy of Office

Actually, I followed the link to the channel 9 site and noticed that existing versions of Office will allegedly be able to read the new *X formats.
This announcement definitely trumps the OASIS open format announcement. A de facto standard is hugely more powerful than a committee-created one.
