It's a great question... I for sure admired 37signals for the SVN blog and giving Rails to the community. That being said, I'm sure my reaction to the "subway test" would be different had I come to it from a different route.

Just to give everyone some context. I use RoR, no make that, I love RoR. I enjoyed 37's book, Getting Real. They've done some great stuff, and are obviously successful.

I come from a slightly more traditional PM standpoint. (MIS degree, use MS Project, work in IT) So I always thought it was just because I didn't "get it".
