Reverted to a Simple Design
If you're in the market for a powerful and user friendly Help Desk solution, please take a look at my company's flagship product HelpSpot.
After too many complaints about the readability of the blog design I’ve reverted to a very simple layout. I’ve actually stolen the layout of Jakob Nielson’s site. Note that he encourages this so I’m not actually stealing.
I really like the layout and I won’t be changing it again anytime soon. It’s nice and clean and I’m really enjoying having no sidebar. Those of you looking for archives and popular articles can find them at the bottom of the page.

Hi Ian,
If the design is what inspires you to write great posts then I approve this decision. Otherwise, quit messing with my eyes!

Some of my opinions (for whatever they are worth) ..
1. Can you take it easy on the big, fat, bright-blue topic headers (how about a deeper blue).
2. Maybe also a very light gray instead of stark white -- all the white with nothing to tone down the brightness hurts my eyes.
3. If you want to use large fonts, and don't put them into columns (so now they stretch across the entire screen), perhaps make them a tad smaller, or, add a serif font (Georgia is my favorite) to ease readibility.
or ..
1. Leave it like it is - who am I to tell you how to setup your blog.
Sidenote .. Ian - any thoughts on the Delphi for PHP product? I have been using it (playing around with it) since the day it was released, it's real nice, but a bit buggy. Might be a good topic -

Thanks for the feedback. The white is bright, but I'm going to leave it for now and see how it goes.
I couldn't possible know less about Delphi so I wouldn't have any idea what to say about it. I did see something about it and went to the site, but didn't understand what was cool. I thought Delphi was a language but the site seems to be about an IDE. Do you write in Delphi and it converts to PHP or is it just an IDE that used to be used for Delphi and is now for PHP?

I know - the "delphi' name throws off a lot of people (most associate 'delphi' with the pascal language).
In this case, the best way to think of it (in my opinion) is this.
Delphi for PHP is to PHP/AJAX/WEB2.0 what Visual Studio 2005 is to ASP.NET.
Essentially, you drag and drop (and position and size) components onto a canvas, configure their properties, and hook into events (server-side events as well as javascript events). It gives you the RAD/Visual development part of it (and lots of goodies like data grids and paginators, tab strips, databound controls, etc etc). If feels like you are building a desktop app (like you would in, for example, VB or Realbasic or Java/Netbeans or C#), but the code is PHP, and the final output is a combination of PHP, JavaScript, and HTML - with all of the plumming code written by the IDE).
Again - a bit buggy in my findings so far, but, quite exciting potential - have a look if you have time.
I have also started a blog with whats going on here: http://delphi4php.blogspot.com/ if you want to see what's been going on at a glance (lots of links to other Delphi for PHP blogs, forums, and resources on there as well).

Ah, gotcha. Interesting. I guess it could be useful for putting together simpler sites, internal systems and such. I'll keep a lookout over on your blog.

Just to show that you can't please all the people...
I don't like it at all!
On the other hand, your new design for Userscape is great!

This is definitely better. Cheers!

The new design looks like the Web circa 1996!
I find the full-width columns hard to read.
