Interview

If you're in the market for a powerful and user friendly Help Desk solution, please take a look at my company's flagship product HelpSpot.

Ben just posted an interview he did with me on his Startup Spark blog. Ben did a nice job with it and I especially enjoy how he sets it up for his readers, provides a summary and does a nice job with the formatting. Thanks Ben!

Funny, Joel just posted a link to an interview he gave ( http://www.foundersatwork.com/joelspolsky.html ) where he says "having another founder" (which he admits to having stolen from Paul Graham) is one of the most important things for a developer looking to start his company. Wonder if he'd change his opinion if he became aware of your success.

Actually, I don't disagree with him. Starting a company is extremely difficult and there are many times I would have liked to have had a partner. However, everyone I knew either wasn't cut out for it or wouldn't be interested in it. So I was on my own. I'm not in to the idea of just posting on the internet to find a partner, if you don't have someone who you can trust to go in with then I think it's better to be on your own.

I'd also add that it's not totally accurate that I was on my own. As I've discussed in previous articles, my wife (who now works at UserScape) was/is a huge part of the companies success. She wasn't full time in the beginning, but I couldn't have done it without her helping me flesh out ideas and getting things rolling.

The other benefit of having your wife as part of the team in the early days is you don't have to pay her. rasberry

Great interview Ian. About the partner thing - I've seen quotes like that over and over again. (As you know) I'm trying to get my 1 person software company off the ground and its just insanely hard. UserScape has been an inspiration to me the entire time. It's a great success story!
