How NOT to do a Small Biz Blog

If you're in the market for a powerful and user friendly Help Desk solution, please take a look at my company's flagship product HelpSpot.
I was checking my referrer logs and noticed an interesting post on the Free From 9 to 5 blog about a bunch of people starting small companies and blogging about it (I was in the list thanks Eric!). So of course I clicked through to most of the others. I was very disappointed to find that many of them are only sporadically posted to and even then not in over a month or more.

I just don't understand why this is. If you're taking the time to build a product, the risk of venturing out on your own, and already have the blog setup then post to it! There's alot of people out there who want to read about what you're doing. I've certainly found that out. Just the fact that you can have a sounding board for ideas is a huge help not to mention all the marketing possibilities, etc.

So you ISV's get blogging!

If frequency of posting is an indication of quality, how come I'm not listed there grin

Well I don't really equate frequency with quality, but I do think frequency has something to do with the number of readers you acquire as well as how interested you keep those readers. Some of these people are doing interesting things so I'd like to see them getting the word out. Nothings more discouraging than finding what looks like an interesting blog and seeing that it hasn't been updated in 4 months.

Hey I'm sure he'll list you, drop a comment grin

I agree completely.

I like the ability to follow other ISV's in their attempts to build their businesses. It's greate to see the similarities and differences in the decisions people make during the process. The problems are always similar...the solutions are almost always unique.

I agree that there is nothing worse than a blog without content.

You might have categorized Buyer Analytics as one with infrequent posts. There are 2 blogs. One is for product news and information and the other is focused on purchasing... our key customer focus.

Purchasing Blogs http://www.purchasingblogs.com has almost 80 posts since March. Thanks for pointing this out. I've changed some things to make this clearer.

Good Luck

Thanks Dave you added a link to the other blog now or did I miss that before?

Thanks for clearing that up. I was disappointed in yours because your product was one of the coolest on the list and seems like a fantastic product to blog about. I love that it's so focused and seems like a niche where people are probably really looking for solutions instead of trying to do all the hard stuff in Excel themselves.

I'm subscribed!
