Ian Landsman is Starting From Scratch, January 3, 2008:
Bye Bye CaseDetective
If you're in the market for a powerful and user friendly Help Desk solution, please take a look at my company's flagship product HelpSpot.
Looks like another one of our compatriots is biting the dust. I can’t blame Ian, that’s not a lot of revenue for all that work. I really thought it would be doing better than that. You need to know when to cut your losses. Being an add on product to a larger one is always a tough way to go as you’re naturally limited by the main product and are always at risk of your key features being added to the main one.
Good luck in your next venture Ian. Hopefully you’ll be able to put this experience to good use.
Discussion
Thanks Ian, it certainly has been an experience to learn from.

Ian J.,
I know it wasn't exactly the success you wanted, but it sure sounds like a success to me: you brought a finished product to market (how many get that far?), acquired customers, and even made it to version 2. You deserve to feel proud of your accomplishments.
If you wanted to do this again sometime, perhaps with a different (larger?) market, wouldn't you be able to? Especially since you know what it takes?
Enjoy that free time!

Q,
I don't look on CaseDetective as a failure, maybe in sales, but that could be attributed to lack of marketing, but I never expected it to take off, I always knew it was going to be a long game (that I simply can't do anymore).
I learnt a great deal from CaseDetective, all kinds of things about developing desktop applications for public sale whereas I've been an corporate developer all of my career. One of the main reasons for developing CaseDetective was to learn a new programming language, which I have (REALbasic), in fact I'm well into learning my second with CaseDetective 2.0 being developed in Adobe Flex. So I believe that personally it's been a success.
Ian
